Hormone therapy in North Liberty, Iowa
Hormone therapy that starts with testing, not a prescription
Tired by mid afternoon. Weight that will not move no matter what you do. Sleep that breaks at three in the morning. Libido that quietly disappeared. Any of those can be hormonal, and plenty of them are not. The only way to know is to measure.
- Bioidentical hormone therapy for men and women at Iowa Wellness Center, North Liberty.
- Bloodwork first, always. We do not prescribe hormones off a symptom questionnaire.
- Patients travel in from Coralville, Iowa City, Tiffin, Solon and Cedar Rapids.
- Frequently paired with medical weight loss when the two problems overlap.

The symptoms
What sends people to a hormone clinic
Hormones drift with age, and they also get pushed around by stress, thyroid problems, poor sleep, medication and illness. That is exactly why the symptom list below is a reason to get tested rather than a diagnosis in itself.
What women describe
Hot flashes and night sweats. Periods that have become unpredictable, or stopped. Sleep that breaks in the small hours. Mood swings that feel out of proportion. Weight settling around the middle for the first time. Vaginal dryness and discomfort. A libido that has flattened out. Brain fog, the kind where a familiar word will not arrive.
What men describe
Energy that runs out by early afternoon. Strength training that stops producing results. Weight gain despite no change in habits. Low mood or a shorter fuse than usual. Reduced libido and erectile difficulty. Sleep that is technically eight hours but never feels restorative.
Every symptom on that list has non hormonal causes too, from thyroid disease and anaemia to sleep apnoea, depression and simple overwork. That is the argument for testing rather than guessing, and it is why we run bloodwork before anyone leaves with a prescription.
How it works here
Testing, then a plan, then a recheck
1. The consultation
Free, and mostly listening. Your history, your medications, what changed and when, what you want back. If your picture points somewhere other than hormones, we will tell you and point you at the right care instead.
2. Bloodwork
We test the panel that matches your situation rather than a fixed list. For women that generally covers oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone alongside thyroid function. For men it usually means total and free testosterone, oestradiol and thyroid, and often a PSA before any testosterone therapy begins.
3. Reading the results with you
You get the numbers and what they mean, not a verdict. Being at the bottom of a reference range while feeling terrible is a different conversation from being genuinely deficient, and both are worth having properly.
4. The plan
If hormone therapy is appropriate, we use bioidentical hormones, delivered in the form that suits you. Dose starts conservative. There is no benefit to overshooting.
5. The recheck
We retest, usually within the first couple of months, and adjust. Hormone therapy without follow up bloodwork is not hormone therapy, it is guesswork with a prescription attached.
Expectations
What hormone therapy can and cannot do
What tends to improve
When the testing genuinely shows a deficiency, sleep and energy are usually the first things people notice, often within a few weeks. Hot flashes and night sweats typically settle early. Libido, mood and mental sharpness tend to follow over a couple of months. Strength and body composition shift slowest.
What it will not fix
Hormone therapy is not a weight loss treatment on its own, and anyone selling it that way is overselling. It will not undo poor sleep habits, unmanaged stress or an untreated thyroid problem. If your numbers are normal, the honest answer is that hormones are not your problem.
Who should not start hormone therapy
- Anyone with a current or past hormone sensitive cancer, without their oncologist involved in the decision.
- Anyone with a history of blood clots, stroke or significant cardiovascular disease, until that has been properly weighed.
- Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive. Testosterone therapy suppresses fertility in men.
- Anyone with unexplained vaginal bleeding or untreated liver disease, until that has been investigated.
Questions
Hormone therapy questions from North Liberty patients
What does bioidentical mean?
It refers to hormones with a molecular structure identical to the ones your body makes. That is a statement about structure, not a guarantee of safety, and bioidentical hormones carry the same class of risks and need the same monitoring as any other hormone therapy.
How soon will I feel different?
Sleep and energy often shift within two to six weeks. Mood, libido and mental clarity usually take longer. Changes in strength and body composition are the slowest.
Do I have to stay on it forever?
No. Some people use hormone therapy through a defined stretch and then taper. Others stay on it longer with regular monitoring. It is reviewed at every recheck.
Can hormone therapy be combined with weight loss medication?
Frequently, yes. Our medical weight loss page explains how metabolic testing and medication fit alongside a hormone plan.
Does insurance cover it?
It varies a great deal by plan and by which hormone is prescribed. We give you costs before you commit, and Iowa Wellness Center offers financing through Synchrony and CareCredit.
How far do patients travel to see you?
About ten minutes from Coralville, fifteen from Iowa City, and a straightforward drive from Tiffin, Solon and Cedar Rapids on I-380. See the service areas page for drive times.
