Medical weight loss in North Liberty, Iowa

Weight loss that is supervised, measured and built to hold

Most people arriving at our North Liberty clinic have already lost weight before. Several times. The problem was never willpower, it was that nothing in the plan accounted for what happens after the weight comes off. That is the part we build for.

  • Medical weight loss at Iowa Wellness Center, 1395 Jordan St Unit C, North Liberty, IA.
  • Assessment and bloodwork before any medication is considered.
  • Often run alongside hormone therapy, because the two problems overlap more often than people expect.
  • Patients come from Coralville, Iowa City, Tiffin, Solon and Cedar Rapids.

Why diets keep failing

What medical weight loss does differently

A commercial diet gives everyone the same plan and hopes your body cooperates. Medical weight loss starts from the opposite end: find out what is actually driving the weight in your particular case, then treat that.

Sometimes the answer is an underactive thyroid that nobody caught. Sometimes it is insulin resistance. Sometimes it is hormonal, especially through perimenopause or when testosterone has dropped. Sometimes it is a medication you are taking for something else entirely.

What we look at

  • Thyroid function, because an underactive thyroid makes weight loss close to impossible until it is treated.
  • Blood sugar and markers of insulin resistance.
  • Hormones where the picture points that way.
  • Your medication list, since several common prescriptions drive weight gain.
  • Sleep, stress and shift patterns.
  • Your actual history with weight, including what you have tried.

Medication

Where GLP-1 medication fits, and where it does not

Medications in the GLP-1 family changed what is achievable in weight management, largely by slowing gastric emptying and quietening appetite signalling. They are also not magic, and they are not for everyone. They carry real side effects, most commonly nausea, constipation and reflux. They are not appropriate for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, and they are not used in pregnancy.

The bigger issue is what happens when you stop. Appetite comes back, and if nothing else changed in the meantime, so does the weight. This is why our plans put protein intake and resistance training alongside the medication rather than treating them as optional extras.

Straight answer: if medication is not right for you, we will say so, and we will still help.

The process

How it runs at our North Liberty clinic

First visit

A free consultation covering your health history, medications, previous attempts and what you want to be able to do again.

Testing

Bloodwork to rule in or out the medical causes above. Results get explained to you properly.

Your plan

Built around what the testing found. Medication where it fits, food and movement guidance that works with your schedule.

Reviews and maintenance

Regular check ins to adjust dose and approach. As you approach your goal we shift the plan toward holding it.

Who this is not for

Medical weight loss is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and it is not the right service for anyone whose relationship with food or their body needs specialist support first.

Questions

Weight loss questions we get asked most

How much weight will I lose?

It depends on your starting point, what the testing finds and whether medication is part of the plan. We set a target with you at the first review rather than promising a number to a stranger on a web page.

Do I have to take medication?

No. Plenty of plans here involve no medication at all, particularly when the testing turns up a treatable cause such as thyroid or a hormone imbalance.

What happens when I stop the medication?

Appetite returns, so the plan has to have prepared for that. We build protein intake, resistance training and a maintenance phase into the programme from the beginning.

Can I do this alongside hormone therapy?

Yes, and for many patients it is the combination that finally works. Read the hormone therapy page.

Does insurance cover medical weight loss?

Coverage varies widely by plan and medication. We are upfront about cost before you commit, and Iowa Wellness Center offers financing through Synchrony and CareCredit.

I live in Iowa City, is it worth the drive?

About fifteen minutes up the road. The service areas page has drive times from each town.
