Neuropathy treatment for Hills, Iowa

Neuropathy care about 30 minutes from Hills

Hills sits south of Iowa City, which puts it toward the far edge of the area we serve. The drive runs up through Iowa City and Coralville before reaching North Liberty, so we want to be straightforward about the time involved and about what a board certified assessment can add to a trip like that.

  • Dr. Mohamed Karim is board certified in Chronic Intractable Pain and Neuropathy, and in Functional Neurology.
  • Baseline testing at the first visit and again later, so progress is measured rather than assumed.
  • Free consultation, no referral needed, free parking directly outside.
  • Evening appointments until 7pm on Monday and Wednesday.

A longer drive, on purpose

Why some Hills patients make the trip north

Hills is a small town, and Hills Bank and Trust has kept its name known well beyond its size for decades. What it does not have is a clinic that specializes in neuropathy assessment, and honestly, most of the closer options do not either. That is usually why patients from Hills end up calling us rather than someone nearer.

Dr. Mohamed Karim is board certified in Chronic Intractable Pain and Neuropathy through the American College of Physical Medicine, and in Functional Neurology through the American Functional Neurology Institute. The route north through Iowa City takes about half an hour, and most of it is main roads rather than back roads.

If a shorter drive gets you the same board certified assessment and the same honesty about outcomes, take it. We would rather say that plainly than pretend distance does not matter.

What the assessment involves
Dr. Mohamed Karim, D.C., neuropathy specialist serving Hills, Iowa from the clinic in North Liberty

The basics

What neuropathy looks like, and what causes it

Burning or electric pain in the feet, worse in the evening. Numbness in the soles or fingertips. A sensation of walking on gravel or in socks that are not there. Feet that feel cold to you but not to the touch. Balance that has quietly become less reliable in the dark or on uneven ground. Weakness gripping a jar or turning a key.

Causes

Diabetes and prediabetes account for most cases. Others include chemotherapy, B12 deficiency, thyroid disease, kidney disease, alcohol, autoimmune conditions and nerve compression. Where no cause is found it is called idiopathic neuropathy, and it is still worth assessing.

The assessment

Sensation across feet and hands, vibration and position sense, reflexes and strength, balance and gait, and circulation to the extremities, alongside your history and any bloodwork you already have. Repeated later against that baseline.

Hills to North Liberty

The fastest route runs north on US-218 through Iowa City, then picks up I-380 for the last stretch into North Liberty, finishing at 1395 Jordan St Unit C. It is about 30 minutes in normal traffic. Parking is free and directly outside, with a level entrance from the lot.

Evening appointments on Monday and Wednesday run until 7pm, worth using if the trip north eats into your afternoon. As with our other outlying towns, some patients from Hills combine the visit with IV therapy or a sauna session to make the drive count for more.

Questions

Hills patient questions

Is there anywhere closer that does this kind of assessment?

Not that offers board certification specifically in Chronic Intractable Pain and Neuropathy. If you find one closer that does, it is worth a call to compare.

Do I need a referral?

No. Call (319) 380-4380 or use the contact page and we will find you a time.

How many visits will treatment take?

It runs as a course rather than a single appointment, with a retest built in. We agree the schedule with you at the consultation, so the commitment is clear before you start.

Can I combine appointments to make the drive worth it?

Often, yes. Patients travelling further sometimes pair a neuropathy visit with IV therapy or an infrared sauna session. Ask when you book.

What else is available at the clinic?

All seven services, including hormone therapy, IV therapy, medical weight loss, Gut Health, ozone therapy and infrared sauna.
