The honest question
Why drive past clinics that are closer?
Fair question, and we would rather answer it directly than pretend the drive does not exist. Cedar Rapids has plenty of good healthcare. What it has less of is a clinic where neuropathy is a specialism rather than one item on a services list.
Board certification, specifically in this
Dr. Karim holds board certification in Chronic Intractable Pain and Neuropathy, and separately in Functional Neurology. Those are qualifications in the exact problem you are booking about, not a general credential with neuropathy mentioned underneath it.
Measurement, not impressions
Sensation, vibration, reflexes, strength, balance and circulation are measured at the start and repeated as care goes on. That means a defined point where we look at the numbers together and decide whether to continue, change the plan, or stop.
We will tell you if it is not working
The retest exists so that the decision is based on data rather than on how invested you already are. If your numbers have not moved after a fair trial, we say so. That is the opposite of a clinic selling you a twenty visit package upfront.
Fewer visits than you expect
Care is a course, so there will be several visits. But most are short, and the evening slots on Monday and Wednesday mean the trip usually costs you an evening rather than a working day.
If a closer clinic can offer you the same assessment and the same honesty about outcomes, go there. We would rather say that than pretend distance does not matter.
What we see
Neuropathy symptoms that bring people down from Cedar Rapids
Burning or electric pain in the feet that gets worse in the evening. Numbness in the soles or fingertips. The sensation of walking on gravel or in socks that are not there. Feet that feel cold to you but not to the touch. Balance that has quietly become unreliable in the dark or on stairs. Weakness gripping a jar or turning a key.
Diabetes and prediabetes are behind more of these cases than anything else. Chemotherapy is another common cause, along with B12 deficiency, thyroid disease, kidney disease, alcohol use, autoimmune conditions and physical compression of a nerve. A meaningful share of cases never get a cause identified at all, which is called idiopathic neuropathy, and it is still worth assessing properly.
The detail of what the assessment covers and what non surgical care involves is on the main neuropathy treatments page. It is worth reading before you make the drive.
The drive
Cedar Rapids to North Liberty
From most of Cedar Rapids it is I-380 south and off at the North Liberty exit, then a couple of minutes to 1395 Jordan St Unit C. From the south and west sides of the city it is closer to twenty minutes. Parking is free and directly outside, and the entrance is level from the lot.
Book the Monday or Wednesday evening slots if you are coming after work. They run until 7pm specifically so that people travelling from Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are not trying to fit an appointment into the middle of the afternoon.
If you are also interested in IV therapy or an infrared sauna session, say so when you book and we will try to put them on the same visit. It makes the trip go further.

Questions
Cedar Rapids patient questions
Is it really worth driving twenty five minutes?
That depends on what you have already tried. If you have been assessed properly, had your sensation and balance measured, and been given a plan that gets retested, then probably not. If you have been told to live with it, then a free consultation costs you one evening to find out.
How many visits will I need?
Neuropathy care runs as a course rather than a single appointment. We agree the schedule with you at the consultation, build in a retest point, and tell you honestly what the commitment looks like before you start rather than after.
Can I do several things in one trip?
Often yes. Patients travelling further frequently combine a neuropathy appointment with IV therapy or a sauna session. Mention it when booking so we can schedule it in one visit.
My neuropathy is from chemotherapy. Do you see that?
Yes, it is one of the more common causes we assess. Your oncology treatment continues as it is, and we coordinate around it rather than interfere with it.
Do you take patients from Marion, Hiawatha and Ely?
Yes, and the drive is similar. Anywhere in the Cedar Rapids metro is inside about half an hour on I-380.
What happens at the first appointment?
Mostly listening and measuring. Your history, medications and what changed, then baseline testing of sensation, vibration, reflexes, strength, balance and circulation. You leave knowing what we think is going on and what the options are.
